Walnut Slab
Buying wood from a local mill instead of a lumber store is new for me. Since getting the tools to mill stock myself, I've made two purchases of "rough sawn" wood. I needed two pieces of 8/4 walnut to put on the dining table, so I headed out to my source in the Gorge and got the hookup. It took me 45 minutes of picking through huge piles of walnut slabs to find just the right piece. It was pretty cool driving down the highway with my slab strapped to the top of the car...
My first slab! I was so proud. This picture was taken just as Pam told me how stupid I was :).
Getting ready to mark the cut lines.
First cut was with the circular saw. I could have done this on the band saw, but it was a pretty big, heavy, and awkward, slab of wood.
The rest of the cuts were made on the band saw.
Squared everything up on the jointer, planer, and table saw.
The walnut has met its destiny. You can see more pictures of the walnut in its finished form
here.
